The revival of the Olympic games

The efforts for the revival of the games in the modern era reached a climax at the end of the 19th century with the decisive contribution of the French Baron Pierre de Coubertin and the Greek Dimitrios Vikelas.
Thanks to them the first Modern Olympic games were held in 1896 in Athens at the Panathinaiko Stadium. The International Olympic Academy has its seat in Olympia today. The lightning of the Olympic flame takes place at the altar of the temple of Hera in Olympia. The flame lights on by the concentration of the sun’s rays on a metal reflector. This process is part of a compound ritual that includes the invocation and the hymn to Apollo.
The priestess enters the stadium holding the torch on and hands over it the first runner in order to begin his long journey until the end of the world.
